Sandra de Castro Buffington is a global leader in social impact entertainment and a pioneer in conscious media. Her work has ignited new narratives of transformation and innovation worldwide.
As Founder and President of StoryAction, LLC; Founder and former Director of the Global Media Center for Social Impact at UCLA; and former Director of Hollywood, Health and Society at USC, Sandra has worked with film, television and emerging media to accurately and consciously reflect the most important topics of our time.
Working extensively in Hollywood, and creative capitals around the world, has given Sandra a global perspective on the limitless possibilities for the role media can play in transforming culture worldwide. In India, she launched the first global center “The Third Eye,” in collaboration with the Asian Center for Entertainment Education, as a conscious storytelling resource for the Indian film and TV industries.
Sandra serves as Co-Producer of an explosive new film in development entitled, BRAINWASHED? based on the celebrated talk of filmmaker Nina Menkes, “Sex & Power: The Visual Language of Oppression.” Analyzing shot design in scenes from A-list films by major directors, Menkes presents eye-opening patterns that have become normalized in sexist society. The feature film and impact campaign aim to shift consciousness of viewers and filmmakers, and to transform global cinema.
As former director of Hollywood, Health & Society, Sandra provided resources to Hollywood’s creative community to improve the accuracy of health and climate change storylines on top television programs and films, resulting in 565 storylines that aired on 91 shows across 35 networks from 2009-2012. For her work, Sandra was named by PODER Magazine as one of “The Nation’s 100 Most Influential Hispanics” in 2012.
Formerly Vice President of CEDPA, Sandra guided the flagship WomenLead program to equip, mobilize and empower women globally and nurtured a network of 5,000 alumni in 140 countries. With the JHU Center for Communication Programs, Sandra launched an award-winning vasectomy promotion campaign in Brazil, earning seven international advertising awards including a Bronze Lion at the Cannes Lion Festival and Gold Medal at the London International Advertising Awards.
Sandra is a member of the Evolutionary Leaders Circle, founded by Deepak Chopra. For her work, Sandra has received numerous honors and awards including the Female Eye Film Festival’s Honorary Maverick Award, World Film Institute’s Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award, USAID Maximizing Access and Quality Outstanding Achievement Award, and Bahia, Brazil’s Award for Leadership. She is a former associate faculty member at The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and a past Board member of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation, Women @ The Frontier, and the Foundation for Conscious Evolution, among many others. She is Brazilian-American, fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and proficient in French. As a practitioner of meditation, Sandra seeks to elevate consciousness, and improve health, justice and well-being through storytelling worldwide.
